Paying off your Credit Card Debt? Don’t make things worse

image-9-71808.jpgHave you finally decided to pay off your credit card debt? If so, good for you. This is a step that many people need to take, but are afraid of moving forward for one reason or the next. But although you are on the right path, you need to make sure that you stay on course now and into the future. Unfortunately, many people pay off their credit card debt just to find themselves in more trouble soon enough.

The biggest mistake that you can make is simple: using your credit card while trying to pay off the debt that you have accumulated. If at all possible, you will want to put your credit card away while you are paying it off. Not doing so can cancel out all of your hard work. In other words, if you are paying $250/month on your credit card but adding $250 more in debt, you are not going to make up any ground. Instead, you will feel as if you are treading water.

While it may not be the best idea from a credit score point of view, you may want to cancel your credit card if you cannot keep yourself from using it. At the very least, you will want to think about cutting your card in half. This way, your credit score will not be dinged but at the same time you will lose access to your card.

If you are struggling to pay off credit card debt it may be because you are still using this method to make purchases. To get past this issue, pay off your credit card without adding new debt. This will speed up the process while also teaching you financial responsibility.

Credit Cards: Good or Bad?

image-6-71408.jpgThe debate of whether or not credit cards are good or bad has been going on forever. The fact of the matter is that there is no right or wrong answer to this question. There are some people who will tell you that they live off of their credit cards, and others who will never put one of these in their wallet. Generally speaking, the way that you feel about credit cards has a lot to do with your personal finances as well as any issues that you have had in the past.

Take for instance somebody who has plenty of money and has proven to be financially responsible. This person is not going to have any issues having a credit card or two because they are not the type that will get into trouble. But on the other hand, some people have made their life around buying anything and everything on a credit card. Obviously, this is not the best way to control your finances.

Whether or not a credit card is right for you comes down to one word: responsibility. Are you responsible enough to have a credit card but only use it when you know that you can pay the money back? If the answer is yes, and you are being truthful, there is nothing wrong with having a credit card. But if you know that you are going to spend uncontrollably and get yourself into trouble, you would be better off staying away from any sort of credit line.

Credit cards are good for some and bad for others. You need to know where you fit in. Although it may not seem like it, a credit card is a big responsibility that you must take seriously. If you do not, your financial life could become wrecked sooner rather than later.

Credit Cards for College Students: Good Idea or No?

image-13-62408.jpgMore college students than ever before are applying for at least one credit card. There are several reasons for this. First off, credit card companies are marketing to this group because they know that they can garner a lot of business. To go along with this, credit card companies are also well aware that these students will eventually graduate, secure a job, and in turn use their credit even more. Secondly, college students who are strapped for cash have found it easier to get by with the help of a credit card.

Of course, there are pros and cons of a college student having access to a credit card.

On the beneficial side of things, this is a great tool for buying school related expenses. For instance, you can put books, school supplies, and other expenses on a credit card in order to make the buying process less stressful and more manageable.

Another benefit of a credit card is that it is great for emergencies. Are you worried about your child’s car breaking down and them not having a way to get it fixed? If so, a credit card that is to be used for emergencies only is a great idea.

On the downside, you can get into a lot of financial trouble with a credit card. Once you receive your card and are aware of your limit, it pretty much means that you can go on a shopping spree. Should you do this? Of course not. But many college students, especially those who do not have other money, tend to splurge when they have access to a line of credit. When this money is not paid off in full, interest charges will begin to accrue. And in most cases, credit cards for college students carry a high interest rate.

There are pros and cons of college students having access to a credit card. If you are thinking about this for yourself or a child, make sure that you consider both the benefits and drawbacks.
