Credit Card Rewards: Are they worth it?

image-15-92608.jpgIf you are applying for a credit card you may want to consider one that offers a rewards program. A rewards credit card has a lot to offer if you get involved with the right program. That being said, this type of card may not be worth your time if you do not use credit to make many purchases.

What is a credit card rewards program? Generally speaking, the more money you spend with your credit card the more “points” you will accumulate. Once you reach a certain level you will then be able to cash in your points for rewards. Some credit cards offer travel rewards such as airline miles and hotel rooms, and others give you the chance to obtain electronic items, household goods, etc.

Of course, you want to check the terms and conditions of any credit card before you apply. You may find a great credit card rewards program, but then notice that you will be charged an annual fee. At this point it is up to you to decide if the benefits outweigh this drawback. Once again, it all depends on how much you plan on using your credit card. If you are going to accumulate a lot of points you will easily earn back your annual fee in the rewards that you receive.

For some people, a credit card rewards program is well worth it. Others who do not use their credit as much may be better off with a “traditional” card. But no matter the decision you make in the end, you should at least consider applying for a credit card with a rewards program.

Why are you scared of Credit Cards?

image-9-91708.jpgThere are many reasons why you may be scared of credit cards. That being said, if you check your wallet there is a good chance that you will find at least one of these. And believe it or not, some consumers have a fistful of credit cards. If you are scared of credit cards you need to know why, and then decide if this is something that should truly be worrying you.

The number of reason to be scared is that you do not trust yourself. In other words, you know that a credit card is bad news because you will max it out sooner rather than later. Do you feel this way about yourself? If so, you have every right to be scared. The best way to avoid this fear is to simply leave your credit cards at home when you go to the store. Better yet, if you do not need a credit card at all, get rid of them.

Others are scared of credit cards because they don’t want to pay high interest charges. If this sounds like you, you are a smart consumer. But remember, you do not pay an interest charge unless you carry over a balance from one month to the next. As long as you always pay off your bill in full you will never have to pay an extra cent in interest. Don’t let this fear completely scare you away from carrying credit cards.

If you are scared of credit cards you probably have a good reason. But before you cancel them all, make sure that you first consider your options for protecting yourself against these fears. You may find a way to keep your credit cards while beating your fear. This is the best of both worlds!

The Risk of using Credit Cards

image-13-92408.jpgAre there any risks involved with using credit cards on a regular basis? There sure are. That being said, there are benefits of credit cards as well. As a consumer you need to sort through the good and bad, and use credit cards as you see fit. Every consumer is different, so make sure that you do what is best for you; not what you think is right.

The main risk of using credit cards is the chance that you may go overboard. In other words, if you cannot control your spending you should not be using a credit card. If you do, you may find yourself with a large bill at the end of the month. In this case, the only question you need to answer is: can I afford to pay this bill in full? If so, you will be able to avoid finance charges. If not, you will get hit with additional charges and be forced to pay it in upcoming months.

Keep this in mind: it is very easy to make a purchase with a credit card. But it is much more difficult to pay this money back when the time comes. If you are going to use credit cards you need to make sure that you are comfortable paying back the money when your statement arrives in the mail. If you are buying something that you cannot afford, think twice. It may be fun now, but in the long run it will work against you.

Is it worth the risk? There is nothing wrong with credit cards if you are a responsible shopper. But if you think that you will get in trouble and ruin your finances for the time being, keep your credit cards at home.
