How does your Tax Professional Stack Up?

image-9-42308.jpgDo you hire a tax professional to file your year end return? If so, you are just like millions of other taxpayers. Unfortunately, not every tax professional is as qualified as the next. As you can imagine, you only want to rely on somebody who knows exactly what they are doing. After all, filing your income tax is no joke. You cannot afford mistakes that will cost you money, or worse yet, send the IRS after you.

How can you compare your tax professional to others in your area? First and foremost, you will want to consider the fee that they charge you. This is important because you do not want to spend more than you have to for tax preparation. While fees vary, it is obvious when a tax professional is trying to exploit consumers for as much money as possible.

Moving on, check on the credentials of a tax professional before you decide to work with them. Ask each professional you speak with about their credentials, experience, and educational background. If this is information that they do not want to share, you can easily move on and find somebody who is more open and honest.

Finally, you should always check for mistakes; no matter who prepares your tax return. Every year, hundreds of thousands of returns prepared by professionals are flagged with errors by the IRS. As you can see, your tax professional may not be as perfect as you thought.

It is important to choose a tax professional that is experienced, offers reasonable pricing, and works error free. When you find somebody who fits this mold, you will be able to confidently rely on them year in and year out.

When all else Fails, Call a Tax Professional

image-1-4108.jpgDid you attempt to file your own taxes just to find that this was a huge mistake? If so, there is still time to back out and get some help. Remember, just because you started the process on your own does not mean that you have to finish the same way. When it comes down to it, many people think that they are capable of filing their own taxes just to realize that they are unorganized and not ready to take on this task.

When all else fails and you are up against a tax filing deadline, it is time to call a professional. The worst thing that you could do would be to attempt to dig yourself out of the hole that you created. If you do this, there are several issues that you could run into. First off, when things are going bad there is a good chance that you are making mistakes. And when that happens there are many additional problems that are sure to come up.

Secondly, when you continue to forge ahead instead of asking for help, you will begin to see the filing deadline closing in on you. In the end, you may not have time to call on a professional, which could force you into missing a deadline and in turn paying a late fee. Is that something you want to do?

If you cannot successfully complete your own taxes, you should rely on a professional who specializes in this area. In the end, you will be glad that you did. Not only will this ease your mind, but it will also ensure 100 percent accuracy. And when dealing with the IRS, accuracy is just about as important as it gets!

Three Questions to Ask your Tax Professional this Year

Tax Questions for your Tax ProfessionalAre you going to be visiting with your tax professional within the next couple of months? If so, you are just like millions of other filers. While there are some personal questions that you are sure to ask, you will also want to consider those that are more general in nature. Here are three inquiries that you do not want to forget this year.

1. Additional Tax Rebates: Ask your tax professional about the additional tax rebates that will be sent out in the Spring. Chances are that you will be receiving one of these checks that are meant to “stimulate” the economy. For many, this is a great chance to get extra money to pay bills, save, or just splurge.

2. Pay Ahead of Time, Don’t Owe: If you owed the IRS money this year, ask what you can do to avoid this in 2008. It is always better to receive a rebate check than to owe money. Make sure that you pay enough in taxes this year so that you can reap the rewards when the 2009 rebates are mailed.

3. Change of Tax Situation: Are you going to be making any changes to your tax situation this year? This could include anything from buying a second home to starting a business. If so, get the advice of your tax professional. He or she can tell you what to watch out for, how to stay on top of taxes, and much more.

All in all, these three general questions are important to keep in mind when you meet with your tax advisor this Spring. Of course, you will also want to ask more personal questions as well. Remember, now is the time to get everything set up for a successful 2008!
